Bicycle Caching

I had the mountain bike out for a recent geocache trip.  I have combined caching and bicycling quite often and I do enjoy it.  Actually twice last week.  It is two of my favorite pass times now.  I am a relative newbie at geocaching and have found it to be great fun. I plan on getting out for about a 35 mile mountain bike ride this week to plant some caches. This will be my first venture into owning (placing) caches.

For those that don't know of geocaching I will try to briefly explain it.  Mind you that I am a newbie, so I may miss things or might not have a full grasp on the sport.  This is a definition from their website linked hereGeocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.  In the above picture, a person or persons hid this cache and registered it with the website providing information of cache and its coordinates.  I had loaded it into my GPS receiver and found it.  After I found it, I signed my name on a log contained in the cache.  Oh...this is just too much to for a newbie to explain.  If you don't already know about geocaching and want to know, check out the website.

This is an example of the trails I was riding on this day.

Lets get outdoors and have some FUN!!

  2. Hi-it's pretty amazing, in the last 30 days that website has had over 7 million logs submitted. It's cool your getting into it and on a bike! I think it's fun to combo stuff while your out. Fishing with biking, lunch, errands. It keeps it varied and adds different purpose. This seems like your own style of orienteering. Have fun!

  4. I've heard of this before, and I'd love to give it a try on bike. I just recently got a new folding bike, so maybe I'll give it a go on that.

  5. When I saw the title in Rantwick's sidebar of blogs I thought you might mean caching a bike. I have considered riding to a hiking trail and then burying the bike deep in the woods rather than trust it locked in view at the trail head. Haven't gotten around to it yet, but I might.

  6. So, when I go to find your caches, should I ride the LHT or the Mukluk? Keep in mind, the LHT likes to get dirty too.

Oh, and with over 700 finds I wouldn't exactly call yourself a newbie.

  7. limom...it's great fun. I especially like combining the bike with the cache.

    Scott...over 7 million logs. I never knew.

Dan...I hope to get up your way this year to ride some of the trails. I will be sure to check the caches along the way.

Alex...Yep, great fun on the bike.

cafiend...I have cached my bike a few times. Both hiking and canoeing.

  8. Darin...For some reason blogger didn't publish your comment. For some reason, it's not the first time I have had blogger issues. I have commented on blogs, put in the screwed up robot code, only to find it doesn't publish. I put out two for review as I have never owned a cache before. I have 6 ready on the gravel route, but it will be a while before I get them all in. Either bike will work fine. The circle route would include about 3 to 4 miles of blacktop of the 35 miles. I think I am a newbie. :-) lol
