On the Skiis

I have been on the cross country skiis the last 2 nights.  It was 5k each night at a good pace for a person of my ability.  I pushed hard and it got me to thinking how hard it would be to do the Birkie. The Old Bag is doing it this year and we will be cheering her on.  Anyone doing the Birkie has to be in very good shape.  54K to ski it...50K to skate and both of the Kortelopet's are 23K each.  My friend CAD could do these with ease, but I know for a fact that I would have to struggle through, but I would make it even with my limited ability.

  1. I did the Birkie in 1984, when I was in good shape from doing triathlons. The problem I had was not with my legs or lungs, but with my triceps. About 2/3 of the way through they began cramping horribly, but I stopped at one of the rest stops and ate a bunch of powdered doughnuts and oranges, then felt good enough to finish. Today, however, I'm not sure how I would fare, even with regular biking all winter long.

Will you use diagonal skis, or will you skate?

  3. If I ever do the Birkie, it would be by skiing...classical method.

Big Oak, I am betting you would do just fine. I was reseraching the RAIN ride you are going to do. That in itself seems like quite a feat.

If there is anybody out there that should send in their money, and I mean anybody, it would be this CAD guy. And after he sent in his money...he would be in!!!
