Orange cones

With the temperature up in the 50's, sun shining bright and winter weather on the way...had to do it. I rode the Stop-a-Sec Circle on the Fixie this afternoon. This route has a lot of hills and today, a lot of puddles marked with orange cones. It reminded me of this Bob and Tom tune.

  1. I like the orange barrels song. I noticed that you like bike camping. I've heard that WI has some great rails-to-trails rides, but you should check out the Katy Trail across MO.

  2. I have read about the Katy Trail and would love to ride that some time. Looks very interesting. Thanks

  3. Who puts the cones out? And why? Are there huge pot holes contained within? Inquiring minds want to know.

  4. The township road crew...usually 2 or 3 workers per town... puts them out, generally any time the puddles start taking over the road. In this case, it is right on a corner and I imagine it is there to remind people to use extra caution...like not swerving to avoid the puddle and head on somebody. Many of the roads started out years ago as trails thru the woods. As the townships grew, they purchased graders to smooth the ruts out in the sand. A lot of the times the roads just got deeper into the soil. When they were blacktopped, some gravel MAY have been hauled in and down went the blacktop. That has created some spots in the roads where there are not much for ditches and roads that act like gutters therefore gathering the run off in the low spots. And yeah, some of them probably do contain potholes. just an IMO
